Late 2007/early 2008

During this time, Jeff put up walls in the room and celebrated his birthday by replacing the roof, with help from his dad and brothers. For a few months we had "exposed beams" in the kitchen and living room. Stay tuned for 2008: a year in review!

October 2007

In October, Jeff dug out a crawlspace under what will become the new room.

Then Jeff's brother came to help put in the floor joists.

Next came putting in insulation (made from scraps leftover from making blue jeans!) and laying the floor. Note the tarp sagging from the weight of all the pine needles!

September 2007

In September some friends came over to use the jackhammer to help remove the porch and walkway.

We moved what felt like several tons of concrete pieces using the wheelbarrow! Thanks, Gary and Wes!

Janna tried her hand at jackhammering...for about 10 seconds. That thing is heavy!

Pouring the foundation

Yes, I'm a little behind in posting... in September, we rented a truck from Lyngso and used a wheelbarrow to move the concrete to the forms via plywood ramps.

Here are the finished forms:

Preparing the foundation

Jeff built the forms and installed them to prepare for pouring the foundation. We painted an anti-termite solution on them and also installed rebar to make the foundation strong.

Archeological dig

In the process of digging out dirt, we found several "artifacts" from the previous owners. Pictured are the remnants of a toy plate, marbles, a glass jar, pieces of glass, seashells, rusty nails, and an old wheatback penny.

August

In August, we installed a "bio barrier" to prevent tree roots from damaging the concrete foundation.

In the second photo, notice the cut made in the walkway to put forms in before pouring the concrete.

Breaking ground...

We broke ground on the new addition shortly after receiving the final "starting" permit. Here is where another bedroom/office will be located!
